Workers' Compensation
Workers' compensation cases in Georgia are processed through a state agency called the State Board of Workers' Compensation. This group was founded in 1920 pursuant to the State Workers' Compensation Act, to protect millions of state workers who were laboring under unsafe conditions and struggling in hostile working environments. Today, nearly four million workers and employers in Georgia operate under the umbrella of State Board of Workers' Compensation's guidelines.
If an employee is wounded or otherwise mentally or physically hurt on the job, state law holds that he or she can petition to collect wages lost due to the accident as well as money to pay for medical procedures, surgeries, therapies, rehabilitation, and relocation.
The Georgia Workers' Compensation Law limits employer liability and allows employees to collect some compensation, even if they were partially at fault for their injury at work. As long as a business employs at least three people part time, it must adhere to the guidelines stipulated by Georgia law. With that said, some workers are exempt. These people include agricultural laborers, employees of railroads, and employees of the US Federal Government.
To make a claim to Georgia State Board of Workers' Compensation, a WC-14 form must be filed.
